How to Get Healthy

Losing weight

How important is your health and well being? Do you procrastinate? Do you eat healthy or exercise for a week or two and then slowly slide back into the old familiar ways?

I am here to say, I guilty of all of the above things. If you are like me we have great intentions when we begin, we are motivated, got ourselves some new rockin Reebok's, new exercise clothes, our fridge is stocked with of all sorts of healthy yum yums, we are drinking water, cooking healthy meals, we are exercising, oh yes, all systems are go....

Well at least for the first few weeks, we are many times even getting results, at least I did, Last year I lost 17 lbs and have gain that back plus a few more. So we are in this together. How can we stay focused and commit to losing weight and getting healthier. We need to let the past remain in the past, today is a new day, the day we commit and focus on getting healthier. I have 60lbs to lose to be in my healthy range, my reason for losing weight is not one of vanity although I know I will look better, my main reason is for health. My parents both had high blood pressure, my dad had multiple strokes and my mom suffered from heart disease. I already doctor for high blood pressure, so what can we do?

Health Risks

The first step is taking our health and health risks seriously. We than need to get a picture of our overall health risks, which means...

We need to know our numbers.

We need to request that our doctor to do a Health Risk Screening. Then have them go over the results and explain what each number represents. These tests are done to see the big picture, Blood Pressure,Total cholesterol,HDL(good cholesterol),LDL, (bad cholesterol) Triglycerides,Blood Glucose,Diabetes, Smoking Status, waist circumference as well as physical activity level.

I had mine done at the previous company I worked for. Some of my numbers were ok, but many are at risk level. I lost the 17 lbs right after I was tested, then slowly went back to my old ways, Always thinking in the future I will lose weight, or eat better, or in the spring i will do better with the warmer weather. Excuses, excuses, excuses...We ignore one of the most important decisions we can make for ourselves, one for a life of well being, and health. We owe it to ourselves.

Focus and Commit

Sometimes it is said something has to happen to cause a change. Well for me one day this last week I had the TV on and the show, The Doctors with Dr Travis Stork, yes he is hot, ooops sorry . He was talking about fat, and health. He showed what actual fat looks like, its nasty looking somewhat like a mass of chicken skin only thicker. Then he did something that left me a bit unnerved. He uncovered two human hearts, comparing the two. One was from a person who had led a healthy life. It was small about the size of a fist, the other one of the unhealthy person was extremely larger I would say 3 times larger. He opened each up to show what affect fat has on the heart. It was startling, I guess I had never seen it demonstrated in that way. Basically it was an eye opening revelation for me. Then and there I decided to get healthy. No saying I will try to get healthy, just having the mindset "I will get healthy." everything begins through the power of our thoughts.

If I can do it and so can you. Lets commit together and get healthy! Its amazing what we can do if we put our mind to it.

Last summer I actually ran my first 5K, which I was very proud of. Share your goals and victories.

Hi GDi,

A great hub and one which I may make the effort to follow.

I am not drastically over weight but I could do with losing those extra pounds.

It doesn't do my back any good;plus I cannot get into my biking leathers either. So summertime is also biking time so here we go. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks for sharing this gem.

Take care and enjoy your day.

Eddy.

Hi Eddy,

Thank you for your kind feedback. I hear you unfortunately for the last 10+ years I had sat at a office desk and gradually gained weight, now that I am home full time I am able to be more active and eat healthier. At the office job there was always lots of bad food around and I did not have all that much will power I guess. I feel like I can do it. Its amazing what we can do if only we focus and truly commit. Last year I actually ran my first 5K, and would like to run more this year.

I am sure you will do fine it sounds like you have some motivation to get into those leathers.

I look forward to future contact with you.

Stay Happy!

Gail
